About this domain

Research Overview

Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) is an emerging paradigm that brings cloud computing capabilities, IT services, and storage directly to the edge of cellular and wireless networks. By shifting data processing closer to mobile devices and IoT endpoints rather than relying on distant cloud data centers, MEC significantly minimizes latency, reduces core network congestion, and supports real-time, context-aware decision-making for bandwidth-intensive and time-critical applications. Research in Mobile Edge Computing focuses on task offloading strategies, edge node resource management, energy-efficient orchestration, dynamic service placement, and resilient network architectures. This area addresses fundamental challenges related to seamless mobility management, multi-access edge server workload balancing, cross-layer security, privacy-preserving frameworks, and inter-operability across heterogeneous devices and platforms. Emerging research directions include AI-driven edge intelligence, federated edge learning, MEC integration with 5G/6G wireless networks, edge-cloud collaboration, dynamic spectrum sharing, and lightweight microservice orchestration. These advancements aim to power next-generation applications such as autonomous driving, smart healthcare, augmented/virtual reality (AR/VR), industrial automation, and intelligent IoT ecosystems.
